Our EDs Are Prepared for
Behavioral Health Emergencies

Deep cuts, broken bones, respiratory problems and high fevers are obvious signs of medical emergencies. Behavioral health emergencies aren't always that obvious, but they can be just as serious. Patients may present in an emergency room(ER) complaining of physical ailments when in reality there is a behavioral health issue occurring, such as anxiety or depression.

"Our Mobile Assessment Team at the South Texas Behavioral Health Center collaborates with the Emergency Departments (EDs) at all South Texas Health System facilities and other area hospitals, as well as with organizations throughout the community, such as schools and physician offices," says Linda Cantu, M.Ed, LPC, Director of the Assessment and Referral Department at South Texas Behavioral Health Center. "Our multidisciplinary team is available around the clock to help assist with treatment access or recommendations."

The Mobile Assessment Team evaluates people who are at risk for harm to self or others, are in an emotional crisis or have lost touch with reality.

During emergency assessments, behavioral health experts with extensive training in crisis intervention observe patients and attempt to get their clinical pictures by asking questions about their symptoms, stressors in their lives, prescribed medications, medical problems, etc. They then recommend appropriate treatment and expedite that care for patients.

"Behavioral health emergencies can be very difficult for patients and their families," Cantu says. "As leaders in behavioral healthcare, we have the the compassion to be sensitive to their presenting situations and the resources to meet patients' needs."

The South Texas Behavioral Health Center is a 134-bed hospital that offers inpatient, partial hospitalization and outpatient care to patients ages 4 and older.

If you or someone in your family needs immediate behavioral health services, please visit the nearest ER or call the South Texas Behavioral Health Center at 956-388-1300 or 888-977-1400 for a free and confidential assessment.
