Consolidated Nursery is
Convenient for Parents

We're making changes to the newborn nurseries at the Birthing Center of South Texas (at McAllen Medical Center) to streamline care, keep babies more secure and make it easier for parents to see their babies.

The two newborn nurseries located on 3 West and 3 East have been consolidated to the newly remodeled intermediate care nursery near the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the labor and delivery area. Although all babies are now in one nursery, there's a special area for babies who have special feeding needs or those who need intermediate care, such as intravenous medications.

"Caring for the babies in one central location allows our highly trained staff and neonatologist to respond quickly in emergencies," says Laura Cortez, RN, Director of Women's Services at South Texas Health System. "And since the nursery doors are locked, and we have an infant security system for the babies, we no longer have to lock doors between obstetric units. That makes it much more convenient for parents when they want to visit their babies."
