One Incision, Big Benefits
McAllen Heart Hospital now offers single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) -- an innovative surgical method that lets surgeons perform complex procedures through one small incision.
With the SILS procedure, surgeons just need to make a single one-half inch incision in the belly button, making it popular among patients seeking less invasive surgical procedures. It reduces recovery time, minimizes scarring and reduces postoperative pain.
"Before, surgeons needed to use either laparoscopic surgery with multiple incisions or open surgery to perform these procedures," says Luis Reyes, M.D., a surgeon at McAllen Heart Hospital. He has used this technique in more than three dozen cases.
This technique is popular for patients undergoing weight-loss surgery, but surgeons at McAllen Heart Hospital also have performed colectomies, gastrectomies and hernia repair using the SILS method.
